چکیده

Abstract We study the pricing of cardinality bundles, where firms set prices that depend only on the size of the purchased bundle, a practice that is increasingly being adopted by industry. The model we study, where consumer choices are discrete, was originally proposed by Hitt and Chen (2005) and it requires that consumers’ preferences obey Spence-Mirrlees Single Crossing Property (SCP). We correct prior approaches and develop various structural and managerial insights. We develop a fast combinatorial technique to obtain the optimal prices. We extend our analysis to address a quantity discount problem originally proposed in Spence (1980). We provide examples that demonstrate that the proposed approach of Spence (1980) only identifies local optima without providing guidance on selecting the globally optimal pricing function. Our insights from the discrete model are extended to this context to develop a scheme that provides solutions within an arbitrary pre-specified tolerance. Consequently, we also solve the continuous version of the cardinality bundling problem.

Bundle pricing of inventories with stochastic demand

We consider a retailer selling a fixed inventory of two perishable products over a finite horizon. The products are sold individually or as part of a bundle. The customers arrive following a Poisson Process and each customer makes a purchasing decision based on her reservation prices of individual products: she either buys one of the individual products, buys the bundle or leaves without a purc...

Measuring Heterogeneous Reservation Prices for Product Bundles

This paper develops a model for capturing continuous heterogeneity in the joint distribution of reservation prices for products and bundles. Our model is derived from utility theory and captures both withinand among-subject variability. Furthermore, it provides dollarmetric reservation prices and individual-level estimates that allow the firm to target customers and develop customized and nonli...

Optimal Bundling and Pricing under a Monopoly: Contrasting Complements and Substitutes from Independently Valued Products*

Marketing literature has witnessed a recent spurt in articles devoted to the study of bundling. Manifestations of bundling include vacation packages, magazine subscriptions, and software bundles. Much of the academic work in marketing on bundling is rooted in seminal theories developed by economists (e.g., Adams and Yellen 1976). These studies rely on the reservation price paradigm and demonstr...

Optimal Bundling and Pricing of Multi-Service Bundles from a Value-based Perspective A Software-as-a-Service case

Software vendors are increasingly adopting Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) pricing model, whereby software is offered as a web-based service in exchange for a subscription fee. In addition, software vendors become increasingly interested in using bundling of services to maximize their market penetration, revenue and, or profits. The objective of this paper is aimed at presenting and demonstrating ...

Optimal product bundling with dependent valuations: The price of independence

In this paper we investigate the tactical problem of pricing a bundle of products when the underlying valuations of the bundle components are dependent. We use copula theory to model the joint density of reservation prices and provide analytical derivations for the prices under different bundling strategies and sharp bounds for the profit function. We discover that when only the bundle is offer...
